Sharing the road with cyclists
Summer is peak cycling season so take care around cyclists to make the roads safer for everyone
Cycling is increasingly popular in Britain for both commuting and leisure. But with many drivers unaware of the rights and rules of the road for cyclists, road sharing can lead to accidents.
The good news is that cycling accidents have fallen to their lowest level for decades in some places, particularly cities such as London.
However, accidents do still happen, with cyclists and motorists both suffering injuries and damage to their vehicles. The most common cycling accidents include motorists driving into the path of a cyclist, cyclists turning right and children cycling too fast.
Keep the roads safe for yourself and other road users with these simple tips.
- Slow down and give space
It’s impossible to predict what other road users, including cyclists, are intending to do, so drop your speed and keep a good distance from them to allow time to react. - Shoulder check
Always check the inside lane before making a turn to check that a cyclist is not approaching in your blind spot. - Respect bike lanes
Don’t drive or park in a bike lane. If a bike has to swerve to avoid your car, it can lead to accidents. - Don’t race to the turning
Accelerating past a cyclist at an junction is more likely to result in an accident. Instead, allow the cyclist to get past, and then make the turn. - Watch your doors
When parking, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before opening your car door. Many minor and major cycling accidents happen this way. - Switch off the mobile
It is against the law to talk on the mobile phone while driving, and for good reason. By giving other road users your full attention, you will raise your chances of staying safe, as well as theirs.
